Why is Viagra Effective?

Viagra is the most widely used medicine for the treatment of erectile dysfunction commonly referred to as ED. Perhaps no other medication could achieve the wonders that Viagra has! Today it is the most extensively used medication to treat ED or impotency. Why is Viagra so successful and how does it work?
To understand the mechanism of Viagra you first need to understand what happens in the bodies of men who are affected by ED. In erectile dysfunction the smooth muscles of the arteries fail to supply the proper amounts of blood to the penis tissues and cells that gradually help in erection of the penis. Viagra increases the flow of blood to the muscle and tissue mass of the penis.

How Viagra works?

Viagra contains certain chemicals that inhibit a specific enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 located in the smooth muscle of the arteries that supply blood to the penis. Once that is done the NO (nitric oxide) is produced in the special nerve cells called NANC cells. The NO then relaxes the smooth muscle lining of the arteries and leads to vasodilation. The engorgement of arteries enlarges and blood slowly fills into these arteries thus improving the ability of the penis to remain erect.

Viagra thus inhibits the PDE5 and triggers the NO for muscle relaxation and subsequent blood flow into the penis. When consumed on an empty stomach the ingredients of this medication travel with the blood stream and move to the penile region to do its work.  The effects of Viagra usually last for 4-6 hours however this response is most intense after half an hour of taking this medication and the intensity remains intact for one or two hours. Slowly the rate of effectiveness is reduced.

Viarga contains Sildenafil citrate which acts as the PDE5 inhibitor and is the main ingredient that triggers the flow of blood into the penile area however this has nothing to do with the virility of the male hormone known as testosterone. Viagra is not able to treat problems such as premature ejaculation and other problems. Its main function is sexual stimulation and increased flow of blood into the penis and penis tissues for increasing the ability to achieve and maintain an erection.
